DOT Physicals

If you drive for a living, you will be required to have a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical. This exam is designed to ensure that you are healthy enough to drive a vehicle on public roads. If you have your physical scheduled with Dr. Scott at Restoration Chiropractic in Andrews, you should know what to expect during your visit.

.

What You Should Bring

There are a few things you will need to bring to your DOT physical. These include:

  • Glasses or contacts if you need them
  • A hearing aid if you need one
  • A list of any medications and supplements you take daily
  • Notes from your doctor regarding any pre-existing conditions if you have any
  • Your DOT physical form to be filled out by our examiner

30 To 45 Minutes

Your DOT physical is relatively short. It will only take 30 to 45 minutes for the complete examination.

Vision Test

During your DOT physical, your vision will be tested. You will be required to read the Snellen chart to ensure that you can see properly. To pass the vision exam, your vision must be at least 20/40 with or without correction. If you wear glasses or contacts, you should bring them with you.

Hearing Test

You need to hear well to drive safely, which is why your DOT physical includes a hearing test. During the test, our examiner will stand five feet away and speak in a forced whisper. You must be able to repeat what is said to pass the hearing test.

Blood Pressure and Pulse

Your DOT physical will include a blood pressure check. This will check for high blood pressure which is very serious and can affect your driving if it goes untreated. We will also check your pulse to look for heartbeat irregularities. The last thing you want is to have a heart issue while driving.

Lungs

We will listen to your lungs to detect any respiratory issues or illness.

Urinalysis

You will be required to provide a urine sample during your physical. This will be used to detect underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes, which can be life-threatening if it goes untreated.

Physical Exam

During your DOT physical, we will perform a quick medical exam. This exam will be less intense than your annual physical with your primary care physician. A few things we will look for include:

  • Your general appearance
  • Hernia
  • Spinal issues
  • Neurological issues
  • Vascular issues
